Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of a GSTIN?
A GSTIN has 15 characters. The first two are the state code, the next ten are the PAN of the business, the 13th is the registration number for that PAN in that state, the 14th is Z by default, and the 15th is a check character calculated from the first fourteen. For example, in 27AAPFU0939F1ZV, 27 is Maharashtra and AAPFU0939F is the PAN.
Does this tool tell me if a GSTIN is active?
No. It checks that the number is correctly formed, which catches typing mistakes and made-up numbers. Whether a GSTIN is registered, active, suspended or cancelled is known only to the GST system. Use the Search Taxpayer page on the official GST portal for that; the tool links to it from every result.
What is the check digit in a GSTIN?
The 15th character is calculated from the first fourteen using a base-36 checksum. If any one character is mistyped, the check usually no longer matches, so a failed check is a strong sign of a typo. The tool does not guess the correction, because the mistake could be in any of the characters, not just the last one.
How do I find the state from a GSTIN?
The first two digits are the state code. For example, 07 is Delhi, 27 is Maharashtra, 29 is Karnataka and 33 is Tamil Nadu. The tool shows the state for every valid code, including the newer codes 37 for Andhra Pradesh and 38 for Ladakh, and flags the old codes 25 and 28.
How do I find the PAN from a GSTIN?
Characters 3 to 12 of a GSTIN are the PAN of the business. The fourth letter of the PAN shows the type of holder: C for a company, F for a firm or LLP, P for an individual, H for an HUF, T for a trust and so on. The tool extracts the PAN and names the holder type.
Can I validate many GSTINs at once?
Yes. Switch to Bulk list and paste up to 1,000 GSTINs, one per line or separated by commas, straight from Excel or a vendor master. Each one is checked, the counts of valid and invalid numbers are shown, and you can download the results as a CSV file.
Why does a GSTIN from my supplier show as invalid?
Most often it is a typing error: a 0 for an O, a 1 for an I, or two characters swapped. Ask the supplier for a copy of the GST registration certificate and compare character by character. Registrations for TDS or TCS deductors are built on a TAN rather than a PAN and use a different format, which this tool reports separately.
Why should I check a GSTIN before invoicing?
Input tax credit depends on the buyer's GSTIN being reported correctly by the seller. A mistyped GSTIN on a B2B invoice means the credit does not show up for the buyer, which leads to amended returns and payment disputes. Checking the number first avoids that.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The checks run in your browser with JavaScript. The GSTINs you type or paste are not sent to any server, logged or stored, so it is safe to validate a full customer or vendor list.
GST number kaise check kare?
GSTIN ko box mein paste kijiye. Tool turant batata hai ki number sahi format mein hai ya nahi, aur kaun se state ka hai, PAN kya hai aur business kis type ka hai. Number active hai ya nahi, yeh jaanne ke liye result ke neeche diye GST portal ke link par jaakar Search Taxpayer mein check kijiye.
What each part of a GSTIN means
Every regular GSTIN has the same 15-character structure. The first two digits are the state code of the state where the business is registered, such as 27 for Maharashtra or 33 for Tamil Nadu. The next ten characters are the PAN of the business, so one PAN can have several GSTINs, one for each state where it is registered.
The 13th character is the registration number for that PAN within that state. It is 1 for the first registration, 2 for the second, and continues with letters after 9, so a business with several registrations in the same state, for example separate business verticals, gets a different 13th character for each. It is never 0. The 14th character is Z by default.
The 15th character is a check character. It is calculated from the first fourteen characters with a base-36 checksum, so it changes whenever any of them changes. This is what lets a validator catch a single mistyped character, a common problem when GSTINs are copied by hand from certificates and letterheads.
Format check versus live status
A format check answers one question: could this be a real GSTIN? It confirms the state code exists, the PAN part is shaped like a PAN, the registration number and 14th character are allowed, and the check character matches. A number that fails any of these is certainly wrong.
It cannot tell you whether the GSTIN has actually been issued, or whether it is active, suspended or cancelled today. That information exists only in the GST system. For it, use the Search Taxpayer page on the official GST portal, which shows the legal name, trade name, status and date of registration for any GSTIN. The validator links to it from every result.
The two checks work best together. Validate the number first to catch typos instantly, without a captcha, and in bulk; then confirm the important ones on the portal before you rely on them for input tax credit.
Validating GSTINs in bulk
Accounts and purchase teams often hold hundreds of GSTINs in a vendor master or customer list, and a few of them are usually wrong. Bulk mode lets you paste the whole column straight from Excel, one number per line or separated by commas, and checks up to 1,000 at once. Spaces and lower-case letters are cleaned up automatically.
The result shows how many numbers are valid and invalid, and why each invalid one failed, such as a wrong length, an unknown state code, a malformed PAN or a failed check character. Download the results as a CSV, fix the flagged rows against the registration certificates, and paste the list again to confirm.
Because the checks run in your browser, nothing in the list is uploaded. That makes it suitable for confidential vendor and customer data that should not leave your computer.
