PNG keeps every pixel the HEIC decoder produces, with no JPG compression on top. Pick PNG when an iPhone photo is headed for editing software, a print shop or a design file and you want a lossless master copy. Drop one HEIC or a whole folder; each becomes a PNG on your own device and nothing is sent to a server.
When to use this
Reach for PNG over JPG when: retouching a photo in Photoshop, GIMP or Affinity and saving repeatedly, preparing artwork for a print shop that asks for lossless files, cutting out a subject in a design tool, or archiving screenshots taken on an iPhone. Expect PNGs of photos to be three to five times larger than JPGs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HEIC to PNG lossless?
The PNG step is lossless: it stores exactly the pixels decoded from the HEIC. HEIC itself is usually a lossy format, so the PNG is a perfect copy of what your iPhone saved, not of what the camera sensor saw.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses modern lossy compression; PNG uses lossless compression designed for graphics. A 2 MB iPhone photo commonly becomes a 15-25 MB PNG. If size matters more than a lossless master, choose JPG at 92% instead.
Does PNG keep HDR or Portrait depth?
No. The PNG holds the main 8-bit image only. Depth maps, Live Photo motion and HDR gain maps stay in the original HEIC, so keep it if you may need them.
