- Checks Against YouTube Help: Notes when your image isn't 16:9, is under 640 pixels wide, or is over the 2 MB phone upload limit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube Help recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, at least 640 pixels wide, in a 16:9 shape. Shorts use 2160 x 3840 (9:16). Use JPG or PNG, under 2 MB from a phone or 50 MB from a computer. The previewer notes anything that doesn't match.
Why does my thumbnail look different on mobile vs desktop?
Thumbnails show smaller in some places, like a phone feed or the sidebar, and Shorts use a tall 9:16 card. Small text, busy backgrounds and tiny faces get hard to read. The phone, sidebar and Shorts mockups help you spot this.
Can I test a competitor's thumbnail?
Yes - paste their YouTube video URL and the tool loads their existing thumbnail. Useful for design audits and inspiration.
Why is dark mode preview important?
Viewers can use YouTube in a light or dark theme. A thumbnail with a dark edge can blend into a dark page, and a white one into a light page, so preview both before you publish.
Does my image upload to a server?
No. An uploaded image is read in your browser and never sent to a server. If you load a thumbnail by YouTube URL instead, the image is fetched from YouTube (i.ytimg.com).
Can I download all the mockups for review?
Yes - click Download All Mockups to export the entire previewer grid as a single PNG. Great for sharing draft thumbnails with collaborators.
What aspect ratio does the tool flag?
Images more than about 0.08 away from a 16:9 ratio get a note (roughly 1.70:1 to 1.86:1 passes). YouTube recommends 16:9 for video thumbnails. The preview still works at any shape; the mockups crop the image to fit.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. YouTube recommends 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails (2160 x 3840), and the previewer has a Shorts shelf mockup in that shape. It crops your image to the middle, so keep key details centred. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
