Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert text to speech and download it?
Paste your text, choose AI voice, pick a voice style and the language of the text, then press Generate. The first time, your browser downloads the AI model once (about 400 MB). The audio starts playing after the first sentence, and when it is done you can download it as WAV or MP3. The file is named after the first words of your text.
Why can't I download the instant voices?
Instant voices use your browser's built-in speech engine (the Web Speech API). It plays speech straight through your device's speakers and gives web pages no way to record it. That is a browser limit, not a CleverTools one. To get a file, use the AI voice, which makes the audio on this page and can save it.
Which languages does the AI voice speak?
The AI voice, Supertonic 3, reads 31 languages: English, Hindi, Arabic, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. It reads one language at a time. For Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and other Indian languages, use the instant voices if your device has them.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. Instant voices are spoken by your own device. The AI voice runs in your browser in a background worker: the only download is the model itself, from Hugging Face, and your text never leaves the page. Once the model is saved, the AI voice works offline.
Can I use the AI voice in YouTube videos, Reels or ads?
Yes. The model's licence (OpenRAIL-M) claims no rights over the audio you make and allows commercial use, so monetised videos, Reels, ads and announcements are fine. It does set use rules: say the voice is AI-generated where you publish it, don't use it to imitate a real person without their consent, and don't use it for anything unlawful, harassing or misleading.
How long can the text be?
Up to 5,000 characters at a time for the AI voice, roughly five to six minutes of speech. The whole recording is kept in your device's memory until you download it, so the limit keeps phones from running out of memory. Instant voices read up to 20,000 characters. For a longer script, make it in parts.
WAV or MP3: which should I download?
WAV is uncompressed 44.1 kHz mono audio, about 5 MB a minute, and is best if you will edit it in a video or audio editor. MP3 at 128 kbps is about a fifth of the size and plays everywhere, which suits WhatsApp, uploads and sharing.
Why does the AI voice need a 400 MB download?
The voice is made by a neural network that runs on your device instead of a server, and its files add up to about 400 MB. Your browser downloads them once and keeps them, so the next time the AI voice starts in seconds and works offline. You can remove the model from the studio at any time. Wi-Fi is recommended for the first download.
Two ways to turn text into speech
This studio has two engines. Instant voices use the speech engine built into your browser and operating system. They start immediately, need no download and highlight each word as it is read when the voice supports it. Their sound depends on your device: Windows, Android, iPhone and Mac each ship different voices, and many include Indian English and Hindi. Because the browser plays them straight to the speakers, web pages cannot record them, so they are for listening only.
The AI voice is Supertonic 3, an open model by Supertone that runs inside your browser with ONNX Runtime Web. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the model once, about 400 MB, and keeps it for next time. It then works offline. The text is split into sentence groups and each part is made in a background worker, so the page stays responsive and the audio starts playing after the first sentence. When it is done, you can download the whole recording as WAV or MP3.
Choosing a voice, speed and quality
The AI voice has ten styles, five female and five male, from calm and low to bright and lively. Pick the language of your text from the list: the model reads 31 languages, and Hindi written in Devanagari is detected for you. Speed runs from 0.9x to 1.5x, with 1.05x as the default, which is the range Supertone recommends. Quality sets how many refinement steps the model takes: Standard (8 steps) is the official default, Fast (4) is quicker on older phones, and Finest (16) is slightly cleaner but slower.
For instant voices, choose a voice whose language matches your text, then set speed, pitch and volume. Voices marked online are streamed by your browser's maker and may not report word positions, so they don't highlight words. Local voices work without internet.
| Instant voices | AI voice | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts | At once | After a one-time download of about 400 MB |
| Download audio | No (browser limit) | WAV or MP3 |
| Languages | Whatever your device has | 31, including Hindi |
| Sound | Varies by device | Same on every device |
| Works offline | Local voices, yes | Yes, once the model is saved |
Both engines run on your device; your text is never uploaded.
Getting natural-sounding speech
Write for the ear. Short sentences with full stops give the voice natural pauses, and commas add shorter ones. Spell out numbers, dates and abbreviations the way you want them said, such as twenty twenty-six instead of 2026, or rupees five hundred instead of Rs 500. Read the result once before you publish: if a name sounds wrong, write it the way it sounds.
For a long script, make it in parts of up to 5,000 characters and join the WAV files in your editor. Use WAV when you will edit, and MP3 for sharing. If you publish AI audio, the model's licence asks you to say it is AI-generated, and it must never be used to imitate a real person without their consent.
