Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percent and divide by 100. For a $84.50 bill at 20%, the tip is 84.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $16.90 and the total is $101.40. Split three ways, that is $33.80 each. Type the bill and tap a percent, and the tool does it as you type.
Should I tip on the amount before tax or after tax?
Either is common, and it is your choice. Tipping on the bill total is simplest. Some people tip on the amount before tax, because the tax is not part of the service. On a $108.00 bill with $8.00 tax, 20% is $21.60 on the total or $20.00 before tax. Choose Before tax and type the tax amount or rate to see it.
How much should I tip?
That is up to you, and it depends on where you are and the service. This tool does the maths for the percent you choose: the chips (15, 18, 20, 22 and 25%) are quick picks, not advice, and Other takes any percent from 0 to 100.
How does it split the bill when it doesn't divide evenly?
It works in whole cents. When the total doesn't divide into equal cents, the first people pay one cent more, so the shares always add up to the total. For example, $100.00 split three ways is $33.34, $33.33 and $33.33.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
Yes. Choose Unevenly and type each person's part of the bill (up to 20 people, with names if you like). Everyone pays the same share of the total, tax and tip included, as their part is of all the parts. A $100 bill at 20% with parts of $50, $30 and $20 comes to $60, $36 and $24.
What does round up do?
Round the total takes the total up to the next whole dollar. Round each share takes each person's share up to the next whole dollar. The extra goes to the tip, and the tool shows the real tip percent after rounding. $84.50 at 20% for three people rounds to $34.00 each: a $17.50 tip, or 20.71%.
Does it work in other currencies?
Yes. It starts in US dollars, or in your region's currency if your browser says you are elsewhere, and the picker has 12 currencies (USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, AUD, NZD, MXN, CHF, SGD, AED, INR and ZAR). Rounding goes to the next whole unit of that currency.
Is my data saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded: the maths runs in your browser. Your tip percent, split, rounding, tax rate and currency are saved in this browser's local storage for next time. The bill itself is not saved, and a private window keeps nothing.
