Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount by the rate and divide by 100. For ₹1,000 at 18%, GST is 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. Within a state that ₹180 is split into CGST ₹90 and SGST ₹90; between states it is IGST ₹180.
How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For ₹1,180 including 18%, the price before GST is 1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180. Taking 18% of ₹1,180 gives ₹212.40, which is wrong. Choose Remove GST and the tool does this for you.
What are the GST rates now?
From 22 September 2025, after the 56th GST Council meeting, most goods are at 5% or 18%, with a special 40% rate for a short list such as pan masala, tobacco, sugary and aerated drinks, larger cars, yachts and private aircraft. The 12% and 28% rates were removed; pan masala and tobacco moved from 28% to 40% on 1 February 2026. Gold, silver and jewellery stay at 3%, cut and polished diamonds at 1.5%, and rough diamonds and precious stones at 0.25%. Always confirm your item's rate by its HSN code.
When do I charge CGST and SGST, and when IGST?
When you and the place of supply are in the same State or Union territory, charge CGST and SGST (UTGST in a Union territory) at half the rate each, for example 9% + 9% for 18%. When the place of supply is in another State, charge IGST at the full rate. Exports and supplies to an SEZ count as inter-State too. The total tax is the same either way.
How does the calculator round?
Each item's GST is rounded to the nearest paisa, and half a paisa rounds up. When you remove GST, the price before GST is rounded and the GST is the rest, so the two always add back to the amount you typed. If the GST is an odd number of paise, CGST takes the extra paisa so CGST and SGST add up to the GST. The total is the sum of the items.
Can I use 12% or 28% for an old bill?
Yes. Tap Custom and type 12 or 28 (or any rate from 0 to 100, with up to three decimals). A bill dated before 22 September 2025 may still show those rates.
Does it add compensation cess or look up an item's rate?
No. It works out GST at the rate you choose and adds no cess. It does not look up rates by item; check your item's HSN or SAC code with the CBIC rate notifications or the HSN Code Finder.
Is my data saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded: the maths runs in your browser. Your last inputs are saved in this browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back. Clear all removes them, and a private window keeps nothing.
