Frequently Asked Questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For example, 70 kg at 170 cm is 70 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 24.2. The calculator also accepts feet, inches and pounds and converts them for you.
What is a normal BMI?
In the WHO adult table, a normal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25.0 to 29.9 is pre-obesity (overweight) and 30 or more is obesity, split into class I (30.0 to 34.9), class II (35.0 to 39.9) and class III (40 and above).
Why are the BMI cut-offs lower for Indians?
Indian experts found the normal BMI range is narrower and lower for Asian Indians than for white Caucasians, based on body fat and illness data. Their 2009 consensus sets overweight at 23.0 to 24.9 and obesity at 25 or more. A WHO expert consultation in 2004 also found that health risk in Asian populations starts at a BMI of 22 to 25.
Which scale should I use, WHO or Indian?
If you are an Indian or South Asian adult, the Indian cut-offs are the ones advised for your own health. The WHO table is the international classification and is what you need when comparing with global figures. The calculator shows both categories at once.
Can I use this BMI calculator for children?
No. It is for adults. WHO says that for ages 0 to 19 the BMI cut-offs depend on sex and age, so children and teens need age-based BMI charts, which this calculator does not cover.
Is BMI a diagnosis?
No. BMI is a screening number. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot tell muscle from fat or show where fat sits. If your BMI is outside the healthy range, talk to a doctor about what it means for you.
Is my height and weight saved?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser. Your height and weight are never uploaded or stored.
BMI kaise nikale?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (metre) ka square. Jaise 65 kg aur 1.70 m: 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 22.5. Indian adults ke liye 23 se overweight aur 25 se obesity maana jaata hai; WHO ke hisaab se 25 se overweight aur 30 se obesity.
