Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate and divide by 100, then add it to the price. In California the statewide rate is 7.25%, so $100 has $7.25 tax and costs $107.25. With a 1.25% local rate on top, the rate is 8.5%: $8.50 tax, $108.50 total.
How do I take sales tax out of a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $108.50 at 8.5% is $108.50 ÷ 1.085 = $100.00 before tax, and the tax is the rest, $8.50. Don't take 8.5% off the total: that gives $9.22, too much. Choose Remove tax and the tool does it to the cent.
Where do the state rates come from?
Each statewide rate comes from that state's own revenue department site (or another official state source), checked in November 2026. The tool links the source for the state you pick, and the guide lists all 51 with their links. Rates change, so they are re-checked each January.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska still lets boroughs and cities charge local sales tax, so type that as the local rate if you buy there.
Why is my receipt's rate higher than the state rate?
Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own sales tax, so the total rate depends on the exact address. Type the local part in the Local % field. Where the state has an official address lookup, the tool links it.
Are groceries and clothing taxed?
It depends on the state. Many states tax groceries at a lower rate or not at all, and clothing and medicine are exempt in some states. Mark those items No tax, or check your state's tax site for the exact rule.
How does the tool round the tax?
It works out the tax once on the receipt's taxable subtotal and rounds to the nearest cent, half a cent up. A store that rounds item by item can be a cent different. Removing tax rounds the price before tax to the cent and gives the rest to tax, so they add back to your total.
Is my data saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded: the maths runs in your browser. Only the state you picked and Add or Remove are saved in this browser's local storage for next time. Prices and the local rate are not saved, and a private window keeps nothing.
