Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate hours worked on a time card?
For each day, take the time from clock-in to clock-out and subtract unpaid breaks, then add up the days. 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; less a 30 minute unpaid break, that is 8:00. Five such days make 40 hours. Type your in and out times and the tool does it as you type.
When does overtime start?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. A 44-hour week is 40 regular hours and 4 overtime hours. The tool assumes this rule applies to you; whether a job is covered or exempt depends on the job, so check with your employer or the Department of Labor.
Do I get overtime for working more than 8 hours in a day?
Not under federal law, which counts overtime by the week. Some states also have daily overtime: California, for example, pays 1.5x for hours over 8 in a workday and 2x over 12. Turn on Daily overtime in the tool and set your state's limits. Hours counted as daily overtime are not counted again toward the 40.
How do I enter an overnight shift?
Type it as it happened. When the out time is earlier than the in time, the tool counts it as ending the next day: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 hours. The hours count on the day the shift started.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.50, 45 is 0.75 and 20 is 0.33, so 7:45 is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The tool shows every day and the week in both hours and minutes and decimal hours, rounded to two places. Pay is worked out from the exact minutes.
How is overtime pay worked out?
Overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate. At $20 an hour, a 44-hour week is 40 × $20 = $800 regular pay plus 4 × $30 = $120 overtime pay, $920 in total before taxes. Type your rate and the tool shows the regular, overtime and total pay.
Can I enter a split shift or two clock-ins in one day?
Yes. Tap + on a day to add a second in and out time. Both shifts are added together and the break is taken off once. 7 to 11 AM and 4 to 8 PM make 8 hours.
Is my time card saved or uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded: the maths runs in your browser. Your week, rate and overtime settings are saved in this browser's local storage so they are there next time. Clear week empties the days, and a private window keeps nothing.
