How is HRA exemption calculated?
HRA exemption is the minimum of three amounts: (1) Actual HRA received from employer, (2) Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary + DA, (3) 50% of basic + DA for metro cities or 40% for non-metro cities.
Which cities are considered metro for HRA?
Only four cities are classified as metro for HRA purposes: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. All other cities fall under the non-metro category (40% of basic + DA).
Can I claim HRA if I live in my own house?
No, HRA exemption is available only if you pay rent. If you live in your own house, the HRA received from your employer is fully taxable.
What if my rent is less than 10% of basic+DA?
If rent paid is less than 10% of basic + DA, component 2 (Rent minus 10% of basic+DA) becomes zero or negative, making HRA exemption zero.
Is DA included in HRA calculation?
